TOPIC 1: LET’S SEE IF YOU’RE DIGITAL “VISITORS” OR “RESIDENTS” #mang2049

INTRODUCTION

Digital “visitors” and “residents” are relatively new terms basically describing the range of ways an individual’s engagement to technology and web.

Comparison between “visitors” and “residents” is rather simple as “visitors” spend lesser time in the digital world as they come to the web to perform certain task that is necessary to be completed and leave immediately after that whereas “residents” surf web with or without any reason to. This “resident” mode is more for people that require social presence. When residents completed their task on the web, instead of leaving the web, they stay on and spend their free time browsing through social media platforms, gaming, catching up on shows and they prefer to possess a form of online persona to maintain that consistency of their digital world because they move so fast between services they forget about the others. An example would be bloggers who spend most of their extra time answering inquiries from their readers or writes about their experiences in life or even promoting certain product etc.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

I have developed various social networking profiles both for personal and professional use, such as twitter account as well as WordPress account. Owning social media provides wide range of benefits and opportunities to empower oneself in variety of ways such as providing platform for me to stay in touch with friends, allowing me to explore, for example, if I plan to cook a sumptuous meal for my family, it’s likely that social media will be able to cater me with suitable recipes.

However, there is no arguing that today’s society replies almost entirely on the web to function and people today are moving closer to becoming digital residents as majority of the people are more fond of using technologies for business, education or even purchasing of items that are needed in daily life.

CONCLUSION

It is unfair to say that older generation simply not know how to use the internet because they grew up without it whereas younger generation are able to integrate much better as they born in the century that technologies are already of the most frequently used.

Thus, these two modes should be employed with caution, depending on the situation. However, we should not be moving away from the strength on the originality of language and accent by devoting all our free time into technology and web.

Hello Rebecca! First of all, I enjoyed reading your own experiences. I think it’s a great way to add a personal touch to the theoretical concept itself. It helps me to better grasp the concept as well. One important point that I’ve learnt is that of “residents” establishing a social persona to stay consistent in the ever-changing and fast-paced digital world. I did not perceive the concept in this manner prior to reading your post. It is especially true nowadays since advancements in digital media has offered the opportunity for any individual to present themselves online and hence, the competition to ‘stay popular’ is indeed overwhelming. I also agree that digital (and social media) platforms allow us to maintain relationships with friends, especially those pursuing their studies overseas. And yet, as you’ve reminded, we should value face-to-face interactions nevertheless. I think your ‘tips’ can be something you can incorporate into all your future blog posts! They’re definitely intriguing 🙂

Hey Rebecca! I love how you explained digital ‘residents’ and ‘visitors’ so easily. It is hard to tell from your personal experience if you are a ‘resident’ or ‘visitor’. It seems like you are sometimes a ‘resident’ and sometimes a ‘visitor’ as you have social media for both personal and professional use. It also seem like you only use the web when you have to look up for something or to complete a task. I agree with you that today’s world requires all of us to be on the web and tehhnology is definitely moving alot of ‘visitors’ to ‘residents’. I think older generations are making a lot of effort to blend into the technology world that younger generations live in and I must say they are doing a good job. Its definitely not easy picking up a skill at their age and it will be unfair if we just catergorize the older generations as not knowing how to use the web!
